How and where did Buddhism begin?

The word 'Buddha' is a title and not a name in itself. It means 'one who is awake' (in the sense of having 'woken up to reality'), or

"The Enlightened One". The title was given to Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in Lumbini (Nepal), approximately 2,600 years ago.

However, we can say that Buddhism didn't begin until he attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya, India.
There is not exact location, but it started in the northeastern region of India.

Buddhism started by a man named sidartha Gautama this man was a prince who until he was 29 did not even see suffering or go through it because his parents hiding all from him. One night he drove out of his palace without his parents or guards only his chariot driver was with him. As he drove he saw a family sober because one of there family members died. After that he went back to his palace and slept. The next night he saw a man shrunken by disease, the next night he saw a begger who was near death (I'm not sure about this one try to take it from someone else). The next night he saw a begger who was poor and leaning on a rod although this man was poor he seemed content and sidartha guatama admired this man and he wished to have the same enlightenment like him, he gave up everything he had his only belongings were his betters cloths and his bowl to beg. Here I won't go into details but he entered self denial and did not eat until he fainted then he noticed this was not the web to go so he said no will mediate under this tree until I reach nlightentment and events say he was attacked by people and devils until he was enlightened he created the 4noble truths and the eightfold path. Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born in Northern India (now Nepal) about 563 BCE to King Suddhodana and his wife Queen Maha Maya, so he was born a Prince. His mother died shortly after childbirth. The hermit seer Asita told his father, the King, that his son would either grow up to be a great ruler or a great holy man. The King didn't want his son to be a Holy man so he made it that the prince was only surrounded by luxury and beauty and hid from him sickness, old age and death. At 16 Siddhartha married his cousin of the same age named Yaśodharā. They had a child named Rāhula which means fetter (think ball and chain).

At the age of 29, Siddhartha left his palace to meet his subjects. Despite his father's efforts to hide from him the sick, aged and suffering, Siddhartha was said to have seen what the real world for the first time and was deeply troubled about the fact that so many people suffer. So he left his wife and child and renounced his throne to find out the answer to why there was suffering. Now it should be noted when Buddhists speak of suffering this includes dissatisfaction (unhappiness) with the way things are. Siddhartha went to study with various gurus to try to find the answer to his question. Theses gurus had him do various types of yoga and meditation to try to help him with his quest. None of them seem to have an answer to his question though.

Siddhartha left these various gurus and joined in with a group of ascetics. Asceticism is a path in which you deprive the body in order to conquer and control the mind. He practiced asceticism fiercely, almost to the point of death. At that point he realized that neither giving in to pleasure, as he did when he was a prince, nor trying to punish the body, was the proper path to finding the answer. So he sat down and meditated under a pi-pal tree. During this meditation he discovered the root of all suffering and the path to how to overcome suffering and became enlightened.

After his enlightenment he meets up with his ascetic friends, who by now were critical of him for leaving the path of asceticism. But he explains to them what he had discovered and they were instantly converted. From there The Buddha taught for 45 years until his death at 85 converting many to his teachings and now Buddhism is the 4th largest religion in the world.

If we can believe what's in the oldest Buddhist texts, Buddhism began with the insights of one man who wanted to find a way to end suffering. He practiced many different techniques and studied the doctrines of the great teachers of his time, tried both self-indulgence and ascetism and found both methods ineffective. Eventually he took all the insights he had gained from his various teachers and practices and from them came to see through to the ways we humans cause our own problems. He developed skillful methods for his followers to come to see what he saw -- through mindfulness and meditation that provided direct insight -- and he was such a skilled speaker and organizer that he built a system in which his monks wandered and taught for part of the year, and gathered and learned for another part of the year (during the monsoon when travel was impractical), so that there was a stable community through which his insight could spread.
