Godparents for baptism are chosen (or should be chosen) for their firm belief, and they should be ready and able to help the newly baptized on the road of Christian life. The Catechismsays that their role is a truly ecclesial function. Usually a near relative is chosen, or a very close friend of the family, who is willing to step in and help the newly baptized on their faith journey. This is a very serious position, and the person chosen should be a very serious Catholic who lives his faith.
