That's when he said the recognizable quote: "I wash my hands of this." i don't think it was Pilate. the guards that took him and the people of that city made him carry the cross, Pilate just gave the approval for him to be crucified. In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus doesn't carry the cross. It is carried by Simon of Cyrene. Only in John does it say that Jesus carried his own cross. It does not specify who made him do so.
