Nothing is gratis. God didn't offer a covenant to Abraham until Abraham took the initial step of serving God superlatively, for decades, against ridicule and personal danger. See the attached Link for more detail.
When Abraham had shown himself worthy, God made two covenants with him, not one.
1) In Genesis ch.15, the Covenant Between the Parts:
a) God informs Abraham of future events (the Egyptian exile)
b) God promises the land of Canaan (Israel) to Abraham's descendants
c) The covenant is finalized through a demonstration of God's presence (see Genesis 15:7-9 and 15:17).
2) In Genesis ch.17, the covenant of circumcision:
a) The promises of many descendants (17:2,3) and of inheriting the land of Canaan are repeated (17:8), but the main thing in this covenant is the promise that God will be the God of Abraham (17:7, 17:8).
b) God promises that Abraham and Sarah will have a son (17:15-16), whom they will name Isaac (17:19) and who will be the continuation of God's covenant with Abraham (17:21).
c) The covenant itself is manifested through circumcision, for Abraham and his descendants (17:10).
Abraham
The symbol most commonly associated with Abraham is the Star of David, which represents the Jewish faith and is linked to his lineage as the patriarch of the Jewish people. Additionally, Abraham is often symbolized by the covenant of circumcision, a physical sign of the covenant between God and Abraham. In a broader sense, he is also recognized as a symbol of faith and obedience in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Abraham made a covenant with God in which Canaan was promised to the Hebrew people as an everlasting possession. This covenant plays a significant role in the history and identity of the Jewish people.
Traditional Judaism only has one covenant. It is an agreement between G-d and the Jewish people.
There was no 'Law of Abraham'. The Law code was established with Moses. There was, however, a 'covenant' made with Abraham which lasted 430 years until the Mosaic Law began as Israel left Egypt.(Exodus 12:40-42)(Galatians 3:17).
It tells us that God is loyal to His covenant with Abraham.
There was a covenant but it is not exclusive to Judaism. The covenant also applies to Islam. Judaism refers to the descendants of Judah, who was a great-grandson of Abraham. The covenant was broader than just applying to Judah. Ismail was also a son of Abraham and was the ancestor of the Muslim people.
Judaism is defined by a covenant between the Jewish people and God. Jewish tradition holds that this covenant was made at Mount Sinai, and that the Torah is the document that defines the terms of the covenant. The tradition identifies 613 mitzvot, commandments, in the Torah, and that Jews are obligated by these commandments as their part of the covenant.
Abraham circumcised Isaac as a sign of the covenant between God and Abraham, which included the promise of numerous descendants and the land of Canaan. This act was a fulfillment of God's command, emphasizing the importance of obedience and faith within Abraham's family. Circumcision became a significant ritual in Jewish identity and tradition, symbolizing the special relationship between God and His people.
Abraham is traditionally considered the founder of Judaism. He is seen as the father of the Jewish people and the first to make a covenant with God in the Hebrew Bible.
The token of the covenant in the Bible was circumcision, which symbolized the covenant between God and Abraham and his descendants. It was a physical sign of the commitment to follow God's laws and be set apart as His chosen people.
Long ago, God and the Jewish people entered a covenant together, meaning a mutual agreement. God had sworn to protect the Jewish, as long as they obeyed and respected him.
