How did America influence mormonism?

The Mormons have attracted an astounding number of converts from day one, and still strongly emphasize their missionary effort. They ardently champion traditional values, especially when it comes to the family. For instance, many Mormons fought hard for California's Proposition 8 in 2008.

The Mormon church, officially named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is also a very strong force for humanitarian service in the world. They provide food, blankets, and service to those in need and are often one of the first to respond to disaster.

When I read this question, the first thought that popped in my head was of the youth of today's Mormon churches. In case you're not a member, let me explain why this was so. The Mormon youth have it very tough. They have multiple standards that they strive to live up to, and in the process of doing such, must face the criticism and disrespect of so many others who mock and ridicule them on a daily basis, yet they still choose to obey. Some of the most "notorious" rules that Mormon youth are ridiculed for are choosing not to partake of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, tea, or coffee; not dating until the age of 16; observing the Sabbath (by not participating in anything that does not relate to Christ); remaining pure until marriage; and not swearing or speaking of unclean things. Oh, and on top of all that, they can't hang around anyone who commits any of those sins unless they're trying to teach them to correct their sinful ways. They may not realize it, but these youth set a much observed example to many of their peers, and without them being there to set that example, well, let's just say that today's teens would be much more different. I, personally, am very thankful for the wonderful lives that these youth live as I look to them as an exemplary figure for how i should live my life.

Without America, Mormonism probably could never have existed. Mormonism has been called a 'uniquely American religion'. It was born from the religoius freedom found only in America at the time that it was founded (early 1800's) and it's ideals of personal revelation and lay ministry grow out of the freedom and democracy that America was founded on.

Mormons believe that God had a hand in the founding of America which allowed their religion to come to be, and that He will protect the nation as long as the people honor Him.

From the perspective of those who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church), Mormonism hasn't done much to affect world history. Compared to the entire world, Mormonism is a relatively small and relatively new religious movement - 15 million Mormons is only 0.2% of the world's population, and with it's beginnings in 1830, it hasn't been around long enough to have had a lasting effect, except perhaps in playing a large role in the settling of the Western United States.

However, Mormons believe that they are a continuation of the same religion practiced in The Bible and that they are God's servants in modern times to bring forth the promised Gathering of Israel and establishment of Zion at the Second Coming of Christ. From that perspective, Mormonism has shaped the entirety of the world's history, and will continue to shape the world's history until the end. Mormons would claim Adam, Noah, Moses, and even Jesus Christ as their own. They believe it was ancient Christians (and, thereby, Mormons) who settled North and South America. So, from a Mormon perspective, their history is world history.
