How did God create all this things?

Let's see what the first creation story in Genesis says. The earth was alone in the universe, because God had yet to create the sun, moon and stars.

1. God created light, so that there would be day and night.
2. God created a firmament to separate the waters above from the waters below.
3. God gathered the waters together, so that dry land appeared.
4. God created grass, trees and the like.
5. God created the sun, moon and stars, placing them in the firmament just above the earth.
6. God created both fish and fowl.
7. God created all living creatures.
8. God created man, both male and female. This was the last act of creation, on the sixth day.

Now let's look at what the second creation story, starting from Genesis 2:4b, says. The plants were already in the ground, but God had yet to make it rain so that they could grow. This story is simpler and God's powers are more limited because he can not make living things out of nothing.

1. God created man out of dirt: his name was Adam.
2. God planted the Garden of Eden.
3. God created every living thing out of dirt.
4. God created Eve out of Adam's rib. This was the last act of creation.

God created man as the pinnacle of his creation, signifying the important place humans hold to God since they were made in His own image. The preceding creation was done in the order necessary for all to have a home and food supply.

There is no real significance in the order in which God created things in the Bible. After all, the order of creation in the first creation account (Genesis 1:1-2:4a) is different from that in the second creation account (Genesis 2:4b-2:25), and both differ from the order in which science says creation must have happened.

For example, the first biblical creation account has man, both male and female, created after the beasts and birds. However, the second creation account had Adam, a man, created before all the beasts, then Eve, a woman, is created.

In the first creation account, the earth exists before the sun, moon and stars. And there is light before the sun and stars. But scientists say that the stars came before the earth even existed. The sun and stars are our source of light, so there can have been no light before the sun and stars existed.

So, rather than looking for literal significance in the order of the biblical creation accounts, look for spiritual significance in an age-old story.
