According to the New TestamentJesus taught to obey the [Mosaic] Law, therefore Jesus had no intention of developing a new religion.

"Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall nowise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.Matthew " 518-19

It was Paul who was instrumental in developing a new religion by disregarding the commandment of Jesus as stated above.

'Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster." Galatians 3:24,25

"Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances." Ephesians 2;15

"Ye are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:14

BUT

When Jesus spoke to the Jews they were still under the law. So of course he spoke to them about keeping the law. It wasn't until after the death of Jesus the way was open for all to come to God based on faith in Christ's death as a sacrifice (as the lamb of God) that covered the penalty of sin (death).

That's why Paul says in Galatians 3:24 25 we are no longer under the law and the writer of Hebrews says:

Heb 9:14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Heb 9:15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

God has made a new covenant with "whosoever believes" based on the death of His son. That is what Paul taught. Christianity is not a religion it is about relationship, a relationship with God.

Jesus' influence on Christianity is - there would have been no Christianity if he did not die. His death and resurrection is paramount to the teaching of Christianity.
