How did Thaddeus the disciple of Jesus die?

The Bible does not tell us how or where any of the disciples died. However, over the ensuing centuries, various imaginative legends grew up around the supposed martyrdom of the disciples. One tradition is that Thaddeus was clubbed to death and his head shattered with an axe. Another is that he was crucified.

Thaddaeus is usually referred to by his other name as Judas or Jude and was an apostle of Jesus - one of the original 12. He is not the same 'Judas' as Judas Iscariot, and some think that he may have been Jude the brother of Jesus.

In the Bible little is said about him. However, early church writings suggest that he preached the gospel in the Middle East, including Libya. According to this tradition, Thaddaeus was martyred about 65 AD in Beirut which was then in the Roman provice of Syria, along with another apostle, Simon the Zealot.

The manner of his death is uncertain, but, if executed by the Romans, he would have either been crucified or beheaded by sword, as these were the preferred methods of execution. However, some traditions record his being beaten to death by a club, and this is how medieval art portrays Thaddaeus' death.

Sometime after his death, his body was brought from Beirut to Rome and interred in St Peter's Crypt, However some traditions hold that his remains were then taken and preserved in an Armenian monastery in northern Kyrgyzstan until the 15th Century or even later. Some then believe that they were taken to a monastery in the Pamir mountains, which is since ruined. A recent discovery of the remains of the monastery there may answer the questions of the whereabouts of Thaddaeus's remains and just how he died once and for all.
