I believe the gods of Mt. Olympus were made up to explain science. In Ancient Greece, obviously 2,000 - 3,000 years ago, there wasn't a great concept of science, and how to world actually worked, scientifically speaking. The Greeks wanted an explanation of everything (hence why they were great inventors) and because science wasn't around, they needed an explanation so somebody came up with the idea of deities and divine beings, the word spread and the work was done.
It was an extremely complex religion, with all their stories (myths) and creatures and gods, it was a really complex religion. And also very fascinating.
