Most if not all of the prophets in Christ time were told to go out and preach His word, which left no time to follow their previous occupations. However a prophet is only so when called upon. It is likely that when not fulfilling the duty of a prophet they would have found some occupation to earn their keep or returned to their previous occupations. Perhaps Peter would have returned to fishing. When preaching Christs message they would no doubt have been fed and quartered by the people they preached to. God would have always supplied them with that which they were in need of.
