How did we get the Bible?

Well, depends on what you believe. If you are a Christian, then you would believe that God inspired the people to write down (1) what they saw through visions or dreams or (2) things that came into their heads, inspired be God.

You can purchase one from a bookstore or from a church. There are some organizations (such as the gideons) who give out free copies to people. There are also publications of The Bible published for free for viewing online.

God did not make the bible. People living at the time Jesus was on earth wrote stories on what Jesus said and what was going on at the time. The authors came together and published a holy book the bible. Some people read bibles and write a new one based on what they read.

The books of the Old and New Testaments were codified and canonized between circa 15th century BC and near the end of the 1st century AD. There is no historical account of the steps taken during this long process but there are some tidbits along the way which gives us some clues as to what took place.



The Old Testament went through 5 periods of canonization with the last of these by Ezra, a priest and scribe finalizing the Hebrew Bible aka the Old Testament. This was confirmed by the Council of Jamnia in 90 AD. However, Christians will note that Jesus, Himself affirmed His acceptance of the 3 divisions of the Old Testament about 60 years earlier (see Luke 24:44).


No one is completely sure how the New Testament Canon came together but a more recent 'theory' states that perhaps the apostles Paul, Peter and John were the final canonizers of the New Testament, and that John, with help from other believers, was able to finish and distribute copies of the entire 27 books to the churches in Asia Minor and the Holy Land before his death in circa 100 AD. The Apostle Peter places Paul's writings on par with Scripture (the Old Testament - see 2Peter 3:16).

The Apostle Paul knowing he had little time to live requests his friend Timothy come to him with his previous writings and books. Perhaps he was doing a final review for the new canon - we know he left out his letter to the church in Laodicea in Colossians 4:16.


The Apostle John who out lived all the others gives a dire warning in the final work of Revelation not to add to or take away from the words of the New Testament (see Revelation 22:18-19), thus finalizing the canon.

The Bible was given to man through roughly 1600 years of history and by over forty men.

The 'authorized' King James Bible of 1611 is a translation of the then available texts of the Bible into English. It was commissioned by King James, hence the name.
