Let me begin by stating I can't believe someone can ask this question with a straight face.

Catholic Churches do NOT control people's lives, people control their own lives. However what Catholic Churches will do is tell people what it means to be Catholic, and how to live as a Catholic. If people do not like this, no one points a gun to their head and tells them they have to stay. People are free at any time to leave the Catholic Church and pursue a Church where they can believe what they wish. The Catholic Church can only teach and hand on what God has revealed. The Catholic Church cannot simply change itself to suit the times, because the Catholic Church does not belong to this world. The Catholic Church belongs to God, and therefore must value what God values in her teachings, worship, devotion, and life.

The reality is that people are not free to call themselves something, then turn around and define for themselves what that means. Thus, no one is free to say "I am Catholic" then turn around and define for themselves what that means. Being Catholic MEANS something. It is not simply a name, and not simply one Christian sect among others. The Catholic Church welcomes ALL who want to live a life guided by the Holy Spirit and be in union with the See of Pete. For those who are not interested in this, the question must be asked "Why be Catholic? Why are YOU Catholic? Why belong to an organization you don't support, believe in, or agree with?"

What are the differences between Roman Catholic and American Catholic Churches?

there is none. they are are the same thing. The catholic church in America isn't called the American catholic church, it is still called the roman catholic church because it originated in rome and the pope lives there. However, when the term "American Catholic Church" is used, it also denotes various other Churches, that call themselves Catholic but are not under the Jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church, of whose Hierarchical structure is headed by the "Pope", also known as The Bishop of Rome, Patriarch of the West, or First among Equals. So, therefore, they may resemble the true Catholic Church but are not fully Catholic.
