How do people belong to Christianity?

Most people are taught the religion of their parents, which usually is also the religion of the society and culture in which they are raised. So those who are born in Roman Catholic countries of South and Central America, or those born into Roman Catholic families of North America and Europe, generally would accept the Roman Catholic Christian faith as their own. Those born into Protestant or Mormon Christian families would accept and grow up in Protestant or Mormon Christianity. This general pattern holds true for all religions; one tends to accept, believe, and continue in the religion of one's family and culture.

Having said that, some individuals make a choice to "convert" to a religion different than the tradition they were born into. A highly visible segment of Christianity, known as Evangelical or Fundamentalist, actively seeks to convert not only people of other religions but also Christians of other traditions to the Evangelical form of Christianity.

Often a person who feels very guilty from a sense of past wrong-doing, or who feels a sense of rejection or abandonment, will find that the concept of Jesus Christ presented by Evangelical Christianity offers enormous relief through forgiveness and love. This is the greatest attraction of Christianity: all is forgiven, the past is wiped clean, one is welcomed into the Family of God as a beloved child.

Young people who are separated from their families and familiar peer groups often are vulnerable to religious conversion. Loneliness, a sense of guilt, and a need to belong with some sort of group are all powerful factors that can lead a person to change their religious beliefs and join a new faith community.

To convert from another faith, a person will approach the priest or preacher in the church of his or her choice and ask to be taught the Christian faith.
