First off, Buddhists do not worship any god, deity or man, not even the Buddha. We revere the Buddha for bringing us the Dharma (the teachings). What we do instead of worship is meditation and what we call practice. Practice is a mindful way of putting the Buddha's teachings into every thought and action we take. Meditation is a method of gaining insight, calm and serenity. We meditate whenever we have time or whenever we need to bring ourselves back to the present moment and to attain calmness of body, speech and mind.
So in temples the monks give lessons and lead meditation sessions and sometimes perform ceremonies, though the Buddha was not big on rituals.

Buddhist temples are places of worship for followers of Buddhism, while Shinto shrines are places of worship for followers of Shintoism. Temples often have images or statues of Buddha and are used for meditation and rituals. Shrines typically have a gate (torii) at the entrance and are dedicated to kami (spirits or gods) found in nature.
Buddhists do not worship statures. There may be statues in Buddhist temples which serve to focus their thoughts on the methods of attaining enlightenment.
