How do the Muslims spend their day on Eid?

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy.

Before the day of Eid, during the last few days of Ramadan, each Muslim family gives a determined amount as a donation to the poor. This donation is of actual food -- rice, barley, dates, rice, etc. -- to ensure that the needy can have a holiday meal and participate in the celebration. This donation is known as sadaqah al-fitr (charity of fast-breaking).

On the day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning in outdoor locations or mosques to perform the Eid prayer. This consists of a sermon followed by a short congregational prayer.

After the Eid prayer, Muslims usually scatter to visit various family and friends, give gifts (especially to children), and make phone calls to distant relatives to give well-wishes for the holiday. These activities traditionally continue for three days. In most Muslim countries, the entire 3-day period is an official government/school holiday.

It all depends on the size of the Mosque; when I was a Muslim I attended two mosques on Friday night, the larger one in Pullman Washington, and a smaller one in nearby Moscow Idaho. The one in Pullman was financed by none other than the King of Saudi Arabia, way back in the 1980's, so, it was really nice, everything was state of the art in there. What got to me though, were the bathrooms; one weekday afternoon I went there looking for a black acquaintance of mine, an American black dude Muslim convert. Ever the curious individual, since no one was around, I went to see what the women's entrance and bathroom looked like. Again don't call me a perv; the place was devoid of human life okay? Besides remember, this is a mosque we're talking about had I been caught...... I had to make sure it was empty, which luckily it was.

So, I go to the women's entrance, and the entrance itself, the bathroom, it was like something out of the a third world country. By that I mean, everything was grey, just raw cement, unpainted, and when I opened the faucet to test the water only cold water came out. The men's portion of the mosque, everything was practically luxurious. To their credit, the women's part of the entrance to the mosque, and the bathroom was spotlessly clean, the men's part, just to do absolution before prayer you ALWAYS had to clean it first it was so disgusting.

Again, the front part of the mosque, the part where the men enter, it was borderline luxurious with how it was engineered and decorated. The back entrance though where the women went in, and the women's bathroom, it was all unpainted grey stone in there, additionally, the faucets only ran cold water. It was obvious, that the mosque was not engineered for women, at first I was skeptical that it was built by Saudi Arabia but, after I saw the women's portion of the mosque all doubts were erased.

The other Mosque, the one in Moscow Idaho, was a two story house converted into a Mosque, so the facilities were equally crappy for both men and women. Even though it was not as expensive as the one in Pullman, nor as luxurious, the place had a "homier," and much warmer and family like environment. The services were small, no more than 200 men at a time, and only around 50 to 80 at most would stay to listen to the sermon, depending on the respectability of the person speaking. "Respectability" was granted of course in accordance to knowledge of the Koran, not the University degree they held. The majority of people there were Master's or PhD students, some were even professors.

One of them a personal friend of mine, was a Turk everyone affectionally called "Dr. Ishmael."

I generally liked the Turks more than the Arabs; nice people those Turks.

Generally, people discussed mostly politics or every day affairs. The nicest Arabs I met, were Jordanian, problem was, conversation with them got tiresome because they constantly whined about the government or King Abdullah. Occassionally, but not often, Queen Rania, but due to Arab etiquette rules most Arab males were not comfortable talking about women, least of all married ones. The general criticism against Rania was how supportive of her husband she was even when "the man has someone shot!"

Let me tell you, you hear the Arabs complain about politics long enough, it starts to get under your skin.

Now, all conversation takes place after prayers, usually, at least with the Mosque in Moscow Idaho, the Friday program involved the last two prayers of the day, followed by dinner and honey based deserts of some kind. If Arab women know something, its how to make 50 desserts from honey; I think I must have had at least 50 kinds of honey derived desserts.

So long as you don't say anything profane or vulgar, and are careful to behave like a choir boy, the environment in a mosque during dinner conversation is actually quite relaxed, even with the chit chatter of Arabs whinning about politics. It does not matter if you understand Arabic or not; amidst the Arabic gibrish, you can catch names of politicians and figures.

Don't know if you followed the story way back when, but the incidence sent shockwaves throughout the Northwest. Now, that was one of the worst cases of false arrest I've ever seen because from what I remember the man had 3 kids. I know, I personally played with them, joked around with them and everything. I did not meet his wife of course as it would not have been proper but with a family to worry about there is no way he could have done something so dangerous.

He used his computer knowledge to help transfer money deposited in the Mosque's donation box to red crescent, he used skills, from what I remember, to make sure the money would arrive faster, more directly so that in not going through the wrong channels it would be lost or stolen through corruption. They accused him of having ties to Al-Qaeda, because some paranoid FBI freak piggy backed a signal that he claimed, went to Al-Qaeda. The whole story sounded bogus; personally I think they only arrested him for show.

The man was more harmless than a castrated lamb, and more docile; there is no way in hell, he could have been a terrorist, he just did not have that "fire" in him.

Ultimately though I'm ranting over something that happened nearly a decade ago; I was not there personally, but I was told by my then Muslim brothers, that black cars, those "creepy" black cars the FBI is known for, and guys wearing FBI vests showed up and everything. The children in the upstairs area of the mosque were scared half to death. They did not knock down the door, point guns at people or anything but, the pressence of FBI vests and "creepy black cars" can leave a strong impression on young children.

Other than that, most Friday nights at Mosques are pretty uneventful; people just pray, eat dinner and go home.

In college I was always short of money and I was hungry so, even when I stopped being a Muslim, I went there anyway for some free food. What can I say, I'm Jewish, and according to Muslims its in my nature to do that sort of thing.

First off it's not how Muslim's greet each other, it's how Arab's greet each other that I am commenting on. Anyone can be a Muslim. Now Arabs will say "Marhaba" meaning welcome and then usually they will follow up with "Kefichal" meaning how are you.
