How do you cite verses from the bible?

Usually you give the name of the book then the chapter then a : then the verse.

Most books have abbreviations that are more or less standard.

Romans - Rom, Genesis - Gen 1Kings - 1Kg etc

So first John chapter five verses eleven and twelve would be written like this:

1Jon 5:11,12

To quote biblical text in a publication:

1) Quote the biblical version using the acronyms of the version. (for instance KJV for the King James Version or NIV for the New International version). This lets the reader know which version of The Bible you are quoting from.

2) Define the book from which you are quoting. Many like to abbreviate this definition, I find that that confuses most who are illiterate of the bible and tend to use the entire name of the book , ie Matt as opposed to Matthew or Lk as opposed to Luke or Jer as opposed to Jeremiah. Always use the full title as some of your readers will not be aware of what the acronym versions mean.

3) Use a colon to separate the book chapter from the verse and a coma or dash to indicate continuation of verses within that book.

Example:

(KJV) Jeremiah 4:23-33 is an indication of the King James Version, the book of Jeremiah, chapter 4, verses 23 through 33.

(KJV) Jeremiah 4:23,27 Luke 21:8,12 - is an indication of the King James Version, the book of Jeremiah, chapter 4, verses 23 and 27 only, and the book of Luke, chapter 21 verses 8 and 12 only.

You can of course mix these two methods which would look something like this (KJV) 2 Peter 3:4, 5 Jeremiah 4:23-33, where the first reference gives specific verses and the second reference gives a set of verses. If you are referencing two bible versions you can note that prior to each text you reference ie: (KJV) Jeremiah 4:24 (NIV) Jeremiah 4:24, this lets the reader know you are comparing between versions of biblical texts.
