You have to use your legs to push your body up into a breathing position. After a while, your legs will get tired and you will suffocate.

Because it took Jesus an unusually short time to die, it is speculated that other factors played into his death. (ie. he was flogged, a thorn of crowns was placed on his head, a blood clot, his body was already tired because of the previous torture)

== In general terms crucifixion caused death in a number of ways including suffocation as the head and upper body sagged and the muscles went into a paralyzed state .Also lack of food and water contributed as well as exhaustion. How long persons survived would have been influenced by their state before hand and general health and also the particular mode of attachment to the cross. In Jesus' case other factors were also at work including the mental torment of being removed from the Father's presence for a time on the cross and also it was He that gave up His spirit.Death didn't so much as approach Him as He approached it.
