This is speaking of Mary the mother of Jesus. A manger is a feeding trough for animals like sheep, cattle, horses, donkeys, goats etc. A manger is usually found inside a structure like a stable. Some have thought this manger was in a cave that was used as a covering for animals as there is at least one cave just on the out skirts of Bethlehem where the field is that was used for tending sheep. It is also thought that Joseph and Mary would try and find a place that would be private and out of the weather for the birth of a baby instead of out in the open.
