How do you know the Sabbath is a Saturday?

Through historical records it can be determined that the Shabbat ( the Sabbath, commonly referred to as Saturday in English) has remained unchanged (the 7 day weekly cycle) throughout history.

Although some believe that the Roman Catholic Church changed this hundreds of years ago, when the records are examined it is seen that while the calendar year has been adjusted at times, the weekly cycle has never been tampered with, thus all weeks have been seven days, with Sunday as the first day and Saturday as the seventh.

The book of Mark chapter 16:1 states that after the sabbath, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices and very early in the morning on the first day of the week they came to the tomb.This satement shows that Sunday is the first day of the week.Infact some versions clearly states the "word" Sunday to be the first day. This is further indicated in the book of Luke 23:54-56and 24:1.If one may read from his/her mothertoungues translation it could be more open to understand.

God told us in Genesis - the 7th day is Saturday - biblically it is sunset Friday to sunset Saturday as days begin in darkness in Genesis 1:

The reason is that the Jews have never ceased celebrating the Sabbath. It has been in continuous observation on Saturday since Biblical times. It actually begins Friday night at Sundown, and ends on Saturday night at Sudown.

Christian Answer:

The "seven-day week" is "Divinely Inspired" to "remind man of creation" [REMEMBER the Sabbath day].

Otherwise, "time is physical"... demonstrated and existing solely by the "movements of the planets."

But there is no physical phenomena that accounts for the repeated seven day week, other than "God established it in the beginning.

"...God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it[He set it apart for Holy use]: because that in it He had rested from all His WORK which God created and made." (Gen.2:3)

There is no other way the repeated seven day week could exist at all... or have survived the millennia, except that God made and preserved it.

The Israelites lost track of time during their 400+ years in Egyptian slavery, working non-stop 24/7.

Yet, when God delivered them from Egyptian bondage... the first thing He did was reestablish the seven day week in their "daily routine"... by feeding them the "manna" from heaven [see Ex.16].

"...it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread... This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the Holy Sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning...

"...Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a Sabbath unto the Lord: to day shall ye not find it in the field.

"Six days ye shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none." (Ex.16:22-26)

The Israelites, after ten generations in Egyptian slavery, cared not at all what day it was. They only wanted fed. And God taught them the seven day week... and His weekly Sabbath, THROUGH THEIR BELLIES!

Although the Israelites had "lost track of time"... God did not. The "Creator of Time" knew exactly what day it was.

Some of them were a little slow to catch on, of course, and rebelled as carnal minded men do. And God called them on it when they sought manna on the Sabbath day:

"...there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long REFUSE YE TO KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS AND MY LAWS? ... let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day." (Ex.16:27-30)

And this seven-day-week "routine" of feeding the children of Israel with the manna was impressed upon them... and became their daily constitution for the entire "40 years" of wandering in the wilderness, until they finally entered the "Promised Land" flowing with milk and honey.

And unless every child of Israel awoke one morning some century or millennia later... and every one of them suddenly totally forgot what day and month it was -- then their descendants still observe the same seventh day of that repeated weekly cycle of which our Creator reminded them, long ago.

Because they still keep the seventh day [Saturday] that completes today's weekly cycle.

Man's flawed calendars have come and gone... and they've needed adjusted... and revamped. But... the seven-day weekly cycle has never been messed with throughout the clumsy process.

Jesus kept the Sabbath day when He walked the earth in the flesh. The Holy Sabbath day of the Lord has not been lost... except maybe to the man who WANTS to lose it.

The Holy Sabbath was made by Jesus Christ [John 1:3]... and HE IS THE LORD WHO CREATED, BLESSED AND SANCTIFIED THE SABBATH ON THE SEVENTH DAY... for Adam and Eve!

"...The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: Therefore the SON OF MAN IS LORD ALSO OF THE SABBATH." (Mark 2:27-28)

There is no way God would make the Sabbath day to be "remembered" [see the Fourth Commandment]... and then allow it, through His own negligence, to be misplaced or forgotten among His people.

The Lord's Sabbath is HIS SIGN [His mark... His IDENTIFIER] that reveals to the world who His people are... as well as WHO THEIR GOD IS. [Ex.31:13-17]

That sign is the seventh day of the "Divinely Inspiried" week we still use today. We call it "Saturday."
