When a person is baptized, they are baptized priest, prophet, and king, that is why they are anointed with Sacred Chrism. When a baptized person attends Mass, they are, in a very real way, offering the sacrifice along with the priest. This is part of the symbolism of the Offertory, when we, as the congregation (through representatives) bring our gifts to the altar. The altar server has always stood in as a representative of the people in the assembly at Mass. So, we are offering ourselves, along with the bread and wine, so that in a very real sense, we are being transformed into Christ, which is why we receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion, we offer ourselves, and Our Blessed Lord offers Himself back to us. But the important part is that 1) we must be in a state of grace, with no serious sin on our souls, to receive Holy Communion while in a state of sin is, itself, a very serious sin of sacrilege; 2) we must be paying attention during Mass, as well as before Mass and after Mass. Before Mass, we should arrive in good time before Mass in order to quietly pray and offer ourselves to Our Blessed Lord, pray a sincere act of contrition, and ask Him to worthily celebrate this Mass and receive all the graces possible from it. During Mass, we should be paying attention, and seriously praying, and after Mass, we must take some time to thank Our Blessed Lord for His Gracious Mercy in all that He has done for us, and renew our commitment to live out His Grace in our daily lives.
