Esther could have simply disobeyed God and done whatever she wanted, but instead she obeyed Him. When Mordecai told Esther that only she was capable of saving the entire Jewish community, she could have replied, "It's not my problem go take care of it yourself. Go away and leave me alone." But she didn't. She risked her life to save a race of people.
The three-day fast that Esther decreed for herself and all the other Jews (Esther 4:16) were days of prayer and repentance, just like every other Jewish fast throughout history.
