Four years ago, engravings of crucifixes were allegedly found at a 3rd century burial site in Basque Country. This is currently understood to be the oldest depiction of a man-on-cross. I personally find this surprising, since the punishment of crucifixion vastly predates Christianity. Even Plato wrote about it.
