Confucianism has had a huge impact on the world. It introduced the idea of filial piety, which means having a respect for and taking care of your family - especially your elders. Before this time, when people grew too old to care for themselves, they were taken to a forest or mountain and abandoned. Once Confucianism began to spread, elders were treated with respect and were cared for until they died.

Confucianism taught that people should respect their parents, elders and rulers. They should also treat everyone with respect, even those who are below them. That they should be honest and honorable and should cultivate wisdom. They should always try and do the right thing. Women were at the bottom in terms of importance, and were expected to always obey and to never complain.

You can imagine how most of this drastically changed Chinese society. Suddenly the society at large became obedient and strived to do what was right.
