Guru Nanak started off Sikhism. He chose the 2nd Guru (Guru Agnad) as his 2 sons failed to complete a series of errands whilst Agnad did them for the Guru. The rest of the information is all pretty much the same, the present Guru would chose someone to success them if this person was devoted enough etc.....
The 2nd last Guru was worried that someone might change the stories slightly, so he wrote everything into the book called the Guru Granth Sahib. This is the current and final guru.
Any extra info use wikipedia by searching there names to see what they contributed to Sikhism or go to http://sikhism.about.com/od/tengurus/tp/Ten-Gurus-Timeline.htm for all of the Gurus and a bit of info on them.
hope helped.

Swami Samarth Maharaj was an Indian guru and held to be one of the three successive reincarnations of Guru Dattatrya. He is thought to have chosen to leave his body in 1878.
Yes, Guru Nanak was the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and is considered the founder of Sikhism. He was succeeded by Guru Angad, his chosen disciple, who became the second Guru. The lineage of Gurus continued through nine successors, each contributing to the development of Sikh teachings and the community. Thus, Guru Nanak is directly related to the subsequent Gurus in the Sikh tradition.
Guru Nanak wasn't chosen to be a Guru he became a Guru by travelling around India and other countries. You see he was brought up as a Hindu but didnt believe in the whole religion. anyway when he was older he had married and had 2 sons, as well as this he worked in an office and learnt about many other different religions. When he was 30yrs old he had a bathe in the river and he disappeared. his family thought he were died, so were very sad. However 3 days later he returned and said ''GOD TOOK ME AND TOLD I SHOULD TEACH PEOPLE THE TRUTH'' so he travelled around many different countries teaching people what they believe is the truth. And it became known as Sikhism. so as the finder of Sikhism he just became arandom guru!!! hpe this helped!!! xxx
