However, Christian belief differs, in having a universal belief that the souls of those who were sinners go to a place of punishment in hell. Matthew 10:28 was written at a time (late first century CE) when both Jewish and Christian views about the afterlife were in a state of flux. Although hell has not always been thought of as being a fiery place, eternity in fire is one of the most exquisite tortures imaginable.
