According to the biblical account in the Book of Jonah, God did not destroy Nineveh after Jonah preached to them. Instead, the people of Nineveh repented, and God showed mercy by sparing the city. There is no specific timeline given for the destruction of Nineveh in relation to Jonah's preaching, but historical records indicate that Nineveh was eventually destroyed in 612 BCE, long after Jonah's time.
It was based on the old Testament. It was 40 days that Noah stayed in the arch and also 40 days that Nineveh repented to the Lord at the time of Prophet Jonah..
According to the Bible, Jonah went to Nineveh during the reign of King Jeroboam II of Israel, which was around the 8th century BCE. The exact year is not specified in the text, but it is generally believed to have occurred between 793-753 BCE based on historical records. Jonah's mission to Nineveh is recorded in the Book of Jonah in the Hebrew Bible.
Long ago, the Assyrian capital was Nineveh, and before that, Assur. In modern day, the city Nineveh is in Northern Iraq (Assyrian homeland). When the Arab Empires took over after the death of Muhammad, they renamed it Mosul. Nineveh (Mosul) is still standing.
That's exactly what happened back then. The Nineveh's people were worshiping a couple of gods, but the greatest of them had the figure of a standing man with a fish head. God never did and will never do things randomly. He chose a great fish to swallow Jonah for a reason: the Nineveh' people thought Jonah was sent by their greatest god (the standing man with a fish head) therefore they listened to Jonah's message and feared the Lord. From the king to the last person in that city (the greatest in the world at that time), everyone went before God, the real God, to repent and turn away from their sinfulness ways of living. God was offering a second chance to that city, and they took it. But also God knew they won't listen to His messenger (Jonah, in this case) unless he will come in an amazing way related to their pagan belief. God used their religious system to help them turn to Him, the real God Almighty. The Book of Jonah is all about God giving us a second chance to come back to Him and live for Him.
Well, if you are talking about the Jonah in the Bible, then he ran away from God. God is more of a "who" than a "what", but that depends if you are referring to God the Father or God as a whole, which is a whole different discussion. Jonah ran away because God told him to go to Nineveh, but he didn't wan to go, so he tried to sail to Tarshish. Then a horrible storm came when he was sailing, he told the people he was sailing with it was he who caused the storm, they threw him over board, he got swallowed by a whale, and 3 days later the whale spit him out in Nineveh. There's more to the story, and you can look it up in the book of Jonah.

Jonah was in the whale three days and three nights.Jonah 1:17"Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."
They make a Jonah clay-mation DVD if you are looking to teach your kids about him or something to that effect. Or you could just read the book to them. It's not that long, and with the right translation it's not too tough to understand. Jonah 1:12
