The training for a deacon typically lasts about 1 to 3 years, depending on the denomination and specific program requirements. This training often includes theological education, pastoral care, and practical ministry experience. Candidates may also participate in spiritual formation activities and mentorship. The process varies widely, so it's essential to check with the specific church or denomination for their guidelines.
I am a male lay minister of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church and a Pastoral Council member, to be a Deacon would allow me to play a bigger part in the Church and within my community, but I would like to know how this could come about for me, type of training duration of training and what would be expected of me to serve, where and how do I start to look into this role of a possible Deacon
We have what is called a Deacon in training. These men are set aside for one year and observed by the pastor, the deacon body and the church body. During this time the person is instructed in the responsibilities and duties of a deacon. After one year a decision is made to weather the person is qualified to be a deacon, if yes then they are ordained. During the ordination a body of pastors and deacons question the person and make the decision.
The term deacon comes from the Greek word "diaconos" which means a servant. However, in the Christian Church, the term is mainly used to describe a man who is training to become a priest, and is the first 'order' of clergy before being made a priest, but he can also remain a deacon without later becoming a priest. The three levels or 'orders' of ordination are deacon, priest, and bishop. In most cases, a deacon acts as an assistant to a priest.
Robert Deacon goes by Deacon.

Well, I suppose the Deacon dies. Poor Deacon.
That depends on whether or not the deacon is a permanent deacon. Permanent deacons are individuals who are ordained to assist the priest at mass and in ministry, but is limited in ability to confer the sacraments. Permanent deacons may be married prior to becoming a deacon, but may not marry after becoming a permanent deacon (without special dispensation, that is). A married individual has to be 35 years of age before becoming a deacon, by which time many already have children. There are no restrictions on having children after ordination. Seminarians who are in the last year or so of their training are ordained as deacons, but are required to remain celibate, and can therefore not become literal fathers. If the question was instead referring to the practice of referring to ordained men as "father" then the answer for this is "no." Deacons are referred to most often and properly as "deacon."
