Jesus is alive today, hence the "Resurrection". According to John 14, Jesus has gone to Heaven to prepare us a place. He also tells us that if he goes to prepare us a place, the he will surely return to get us and take us to that place.

Jesus was Crucified on the Cross, Resurrected and then ascended into Heaven in order to prepare us a place of eternal life and peace. He is still alive today, he is just in Heaven.

Christ remained on earth 40 days, the symbolic number of completion in The Bible.

Peter did not go to the tomb. In the "Long Ending" to Mark, the women told the disciples that Jesus had risen, but they did not believe. None of the disciples went to the tomb.
