Roughly 500,000 in the square during an Easter mass or an election of a new Pope, or any other important event. However, the streets outside the square are often filled during these events as well, and can add up to about 4 million people all together, both inside the square and in the streets surrounding it. During the election of Pope Benedict XVI, almost 3.4 million attended the square and the surrounding areas within 24 hours. Within the basilica itself, roughly there is seating for 60,000 people, but only 25,000 are allowed in for safety concerns.
