Jesse had 8 sons.

In I Samuel 16, Jesse presented the first 7 of them before Samuel for possible anointing as the future King of Israel, but Samuel was not convinced that any of these was the right one. Jesse then brought in the youngest, David, and God (Who saw David's heart) instructed Samuel to anoint him. 8 sons.

Later, in I Chronicles, The Bible specifically lists 7 sons and that David is the 7th. The best explanation I have read is that one of David's older brothers may have died before fathering children of his own; therefore, he had no list of descendants to enter into a genealogy and was not mentioned in I Chronicles.
