The Word Money is actually used in connection with Jesus (whether He uses the word or it is used in connection with Him) approx 25 times throughout the 4 Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Jesus also speaks of treasure and wealth a handful of time in those books.
But there is one things that is central to His teaching on the subject.
Many contemporary preachers and teachers of The Bible will tell us that Jesus spoke more about money than anything else and this is how they justify wealth and prosperity doctrines.
But the plain and simple truth of the matter is that while Jesus often spoke about wealth, He never spoke about it in the sense that it was something good to become involved with.
A closer look at Christ will reveal that His teaching on the matter of wealth is the polar opposite of todays prosperity teachers.
Jesus always said things like: "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal"
and "You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
Jesus teaches that we should ignore the way that the world saves and invests, and that we should not be preoccupied with money or wealth.
Jesus teaches that our dependance should be on the LORD and His provision for us.
Jesus spoke about money for sure, but not that it was important to have much of, instead that it was something to give away to those that are in need.
Where in the bible does Jesus mention the poor?
On another occasion Jesus encouraged a rich young ruler: "Sell all the things you have and distribute to poor people, and you will have treasure in the heavens; and come be my follower." (Lu 18:22) The fact that this man was unwilling to part with his possessions to aid others showed that he had no real concern for the oppressed and thus did not have the qualities required for being a disciple of Jesus. (Lu 18:23)
It does not matter how many times Jesus talked about money. People used it. That is why Jesus used money in parables. People want to think that Jesus wants us to use money. That is not the case. Jesus would say so point blank had that be the case. Jesus said Lazarus is dead. That was a point-blank statement. Jesus did not say use money, point blank. The Unseen Father controlled Jesus. Money did not control Jesus. The mind that controlled Jesus needs to be in our mind.
