At the time when it was promised, Abraham and his family were living in that land.
Except for a couple of hundred years that they spent in Egypt, and the 40 years
returning to the land from Egypt, some of his descendants have lived there
continuously ever since, and those who were forced out at various points in
history have begun to return in modern times.
Forty years.
In The Bible, the Israelites wandered for forty years before they entered Canaan.In history, on the other hand, there was no Exodus from Egypt and no militiary conquest of Canaan as described in the Bible. The Israelites did not travel from Egypt to Canaan.
Abraham and Sarah lived in Canaan, which many hundreds of years later became Judah and parts of Samaria. At one time Abraham and Sarah traveled to Egypt and stayed there a short time.
First off, Canaan is described as the land of Canaan in the Bible. Thus, Canaan is not a city, it is a region. Canaan is special to the Israelites for many reasons, but the primary reason is because Canaan is the land of their fathers. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Abraham gave absolutley nothing. You cannot return God's grace, nothing, not even your life, is big enough. Abraham got clost by giving God his heart.
Moses climbed Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from God after the Israelites had left Egypt. Abraham moved to Canaan many years before Moses, as part of God's promise to make his descendants a great nation.
God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would have many descendants and that they would be the ancestors of a great nation. He also promised them the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession for their descendants.
No promise is made to Abraham at this point. He is only urged to "Go to the land that I [the LORD] will show you." It is only after arriving in Canaan that God makes the Promises of Abraham fathering many nations.
