The Bible says that the Ark was 2 1/2 cubits long, 1 1/2 cubits wide and 1 1/2 cubits high, and made from shittim wood, heavily overlaid with gold, with silver adornments. The mercy seat was said to have been 2 1/2 cubits long and 1 1/2 cubits wide, and made of pure gold, as were the two cherubim that surrounded it. Since gold is roughly twice as heavy as lead, the structure would have weighed several tonnes.

Jewish answer:

There are problems with the above answer:

1) The thickness of the wood is not specified in the Torah.

2) The thickness of the gold overlay is not specified.

3) There were no silver adornments.

4) The size of the cherubim and the thickness of the Ark's gold cover are not specified.

5) The cherubim might have been hollow.

6) Gold is not nearly twice the weight of lead. Its density is 1.7 times that of lead.
