The Western Wall that the Jews pray is not a part of the Temple itself but the retaining wall for the esplanade / flat surface that the Temple sat on. Jerusalem is a hilly city and so the northeast corner is much higher than the southwest corner of where the Temple would stand. In order to create a level surface, walls to support the esplanade were built in the south and the west. These retaining walls are all that is left.
