Roman Catholic AnswerThe bare minimum is once a year - that is what is required by Church law, but that is sort of like saying that you absolutely must change your socks once a year! Also, you must go to confession anytime you have a mortal sin on your soul. One mortal sin is enough to condemn you to eternal separation from God, so you really don't want to wait around for any length of time.

All of that said, any Catholic who is serious about their faith and trying to follow God will want to attend Confession frequently, a minimum of once every two weeks, or once a month. Any worthwhile spiritual director will tell you that anything less is just not going to help. Most people, when they become serious about their spiritual life go every week. And that really is helpful, but you won't understand until you start to do it.

Do you have to go to confession if you don't have mortal sins?

As you put the question, no, you must go to confession once a year, regardless, and you must go to confession anytime that you are in mortal (serious) sin. Without going to confession you may not receive Holy Communion without damning yourself. Those are the only times that you are required to go to confession.Outside of that, you need to go to confession regularly if you have any desire whatsoever to grow in the spiritual life, and obtain heaven. Once a month is the absolute minimum for that.

How does the Anglican church members go to confession?

On the whole, unless an Anglican is of the Catholic tradition in the Anglican Church (ie, they are catholic to all intents and purposes except they reject the authority of the pope), then Anglicans do not go to confession. That does not mean that they do not confess their sins! At almost every Anglican service there is an act of confession and absolution, and Anglicans take sin just as seriously as Catholics. However, the vast majority of Anglicans do not see the need to confess to a priest as an intermediary, but confess directly to God, as per the early Church practices and reject entirely the Catholic tradition of 'having' to go to confession on, say, a weekly basis. Instead they confess their sins when they need to, directly to God, whether as part of a service or not.

How do you do confession if it has been years since your last confession?

Be honest. Tell the priest that it has been a long time since you have done confession, formally. Tell the priest whatever it is you wish to be absolved of (and be released from, whether, guilt, shame, anxiety, etc). You may be surprised at your experience. If you have a positive experience, you can go back for more. If you don't experience the support and understanding you need, then you might wish to seek counsel elsewhere. (Many Catholics haven't done formal confession for years, or even ever.)
