According to John MacArthur, Samuel was born 1105BC, and Saul reigned 1052-1011BC.

It is God who both gives life and takes life. In the Old Testament a Godly man usually lived to be at least 70, while an Ungodly man died earlier. Saul had displeased God, so God would have shortened this.

Saul reigned 40 full years and assuming would have been about 25 when he became king, and 65 when he died, this would make him born about 1075BC. This would mean he became king in 1050 BC, thus making Samuel then 55 years old.
