There is no mention in The Bible how old Elijah was when he went to heaven, but from the ages of the three kings that were reigning during his life, you can get an idea. From the time he began his ministry to the time he was carried up into heaven, is about 30 years, and if you add your estimate of his age when he began to preach, you will have an approximate answer to your question.

This is a most misunderstood passage in Scripture and is incorrectly used to support a tradition of men that we go to heaven/hell/purgatory/limbo upon death - which is not Scriptural.

Throughout the Bible, death is described as a 'sleep' in the grave awaiting Jesus' call for all to come to their Judgement at their Resurrection. If people already received their rewards/punishment, why have a Judgement and a Resurrection? It is because, all await their judgement sleeping in their graves.

Jesus Himself, clearly stated that no one has gone to Heaven except Him. The Apostle Peter was inspired to tell us that King David was still in the grave (Acts 2:29) and he was most loved by God.

When Elijah was taken up into the heaven, the word used here means sky and not the Throne of God (see 2 Kings 2:10-11 after reign of King Ahaziah's death). What so many miss is that in 2 Chronicles 21:12-15, which is seven years after the event in 2 Kings, Elijah writes a letter to the current King Jehoram. So Elijah had to of been alive and on Earth as he was. He, like Enoch before him had simply been 'transported' away via the sky to another location on the Earth.

We all die and go to our graves. We each await our resurrection to our Judgement and hopeful change into Spirit (born again) and become children of Our Father who will come down to live with His new Family on the New Earth (see Revelation 21).

Finally, Paul was inspired to tell us of those who lived in faith looking for the better resurrection as they await in their graves:

35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection.
