I grew up in a Christian school for all of my schooling and now that I am older I can honestly say that Christian men seem to treat their girlfriends/wives etc as though they are property, ordering them around like their personal slave (I know that this is a huge generalistion). All I can suggest is don't pay much attention to The Bible in that instance, I really think that if you live your life believing that treating others as you want to be treated is a pretty fine way to live.

If you are saying don't pay attention to the Bible in this regard, and rather giving the advice "believing that treating others as you want to be treated is a pretty fine way to live." Then in fact you are saying listen to the Bible. I think everyone knows Jesus famous teaching, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 7:12)
But here is some Biblical marriage advice worth noting.
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy..." (Ephesians 5:25-26)
Right before this passage it does say, "Wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body which he is savior." (v. 22-23)
This is not popular this day in age, for a wife to be seen in this position, but comparing the two commands, who has the tougher job? The wife submitting, or the husband giving himself up for his wife, as much as Christ did for the church? (Even unto death)
The husband has the much tougher command. So any husband claiming his wife must submit to him, can only do so if he is willing to fulfill his end of the deal.
One cannot go without the other.
