There is no specific relationship given in the Scriptures. Many have said that they are cousins, but there is no data to back this up. Since there is a large age difference between the two, my guess would be that Elizabeth could be Mary's aunt, great aunt, or a cousin once or twice removed.

We are told in Luke that Elizabeth was of the daughters of Aaron or from the tribe of Levi (Luke 1:5). And we are told through the genealogy of Luke 3:23-38 that Mary was from the tribe of Judah. So your question "How are Elizabeth and Mary mother of Jesus cousins."

One very possible way is that Mary's mother, a relative, possibly a sister to Elizabeth, was from the tribe of Levi, but married a man (Mary's father) who was from the tribe of Judah. This would have made Mary and Elizabeth cousins.

In Matthew's genealogy of Jesus we see the line coming through Joseph (Jesus' stepfather. This would be the Legal line for the King of Israel. Notice that the word "begot" is used all the way through the genealogy until it gets to Jesus. Joseph is listed as the husband of Mary to whom was born Jesus.

Then in Luke's genealogy (Luke 3:23 and on) the genealogy is best if looked at as Mary's side of the family, IE. Mary was descended from David which makes her from the tribe of Judah as is Jesus. This is Jesus physical descent, from the tribe of Judah and according to prophecy the Messiah was to come from the tribe of Judah. One reference is Genesis 49:9-12 another is Revelation 5:5.
