Most think the 4th Command is the least important, while the complete opposite is true. God made the Sabbath rest on account of man (Matthew 2:27-28) - for him to stop and ponder the wonders of God's creation and awesome powers which He wants to share with all mankind in making them spiritual sons and daughters to reign with Jesus over all of creation - seen and unseen. What a tremendous 'universal' gift to mankind All and not just the Jews as so many believe:

Genesis 2:1-3New King James Version (NKJV) 2 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. 2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Let's remember that Jesus said He was Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8) Jesus lays claim to His right to show by His example and verbal instruction how to keep it, and not whether to keep it. Since He expresses no disagreement with keeping it, Jesus implies that He expects man-not just Jews-to keep it. Jesus had a perfect opportunity here to reply that it does not matter if men keep it, but He gives no such indication. It is holy and sacred time God sets aside for all mankind:

Exodus 20:8-11New King James Version (NKJV) 8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

By the Sabbath, the true covenant keeper knows that God is sanctifying him/her. Anybody who has kept both Sunday and Sabbath knows this: Sunday sets no one apart from this world as God has not blessed and sanctified any other day but the 7th day - Friday sunset to Saturday sunset - the Sabbath

Jesus followed and obeyed all of the Law - the only human to fully do so without sinning. The Sabbath was vital time for Him to come together with the Father (see Amos 3:3) to do His will. Keeping the Sabbath strengthens and protects our relationship with the Father. We are reminded:

1 John 2:4-6New King James Version (NKJV)

4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
