Repeated patterns. Those who had the time (obviously not the worker and peasantry) realised there were patterns in nature - lunar and solar cycles, seasons, celestial movements (star and planetary changes) etc. By this knowledge they imbued a deity upon many patterns along with a religious ceremony - Saturnalia being one we still keep today (Christmas), celebrated on the winter solstice around Dec,25, just as the ancestors did - decorating trees, giving presents - but they thought that if they didn't do this that the winter would never ever end and that they would all freeze to death (which, if the workers hadn't stored enough food, many did). Patterns and the human brains recognition of them is also what causes many to see 'faces' in cloud formation (which they label as Angels) or folds of cloth, or from shadows in trees, etc. We, as humans can't help doing this. It is 'programmed' in our brain - the trick is to recognise it as such instead of to build a religion around it.
