Religion started almost as soon as humans appearred on this earth. Religion started off as a way to explain things that could not be explained by the limited knowledge that the early people had; and example would be lightning, which meant that the god or gods were not pleased.

Answer Religion was started by the Cro-Magnons (who also started culture) about 40,000 years ago . Cro-Magnons are early Homo sapiens.

When humans finally started writing (c 3100-3500 BC) in the middle-east there was religion already. Mostly it was gods of nature i.e. sun god, moon god, wind god, etc. The Hebrews seemingly came up with the uni-god concept around 1000 to 500 BC probably in Babylon. Paul is probably responsible for the start of Christianity, he changed the Hebrew message which Jesus was preaching, but it didn't really get going until the 300's AD, well after his death.
