If something is moving it's doing so by friction, a water wheel, you pushing a box across the floor, if there was no friction when you put your hands on the box they would just slip right off like it was oiled. friction is the transference of energy from one state to another and since there is no perfect transference of energy some of the energy is lost as heat. Now to generate power you need to be able to store the energy that your transferring, so like a water wheel for example, say you put a magnet on the other end of the axle the wheel is on and surround that magnet with alot of copper wire, the wire is a conductive metal which means it's electrons are loosely bound to the nucleus of the individual atoms. When that magnet spins it's polar fields are going to start the electrons in the copper to vibrating and eventually they will become so energized that they will break away from the nucleus and move down the wire in a current which we use to power our gadgets.
