In my opinion no religion is strict. You just have to be ready to give your all in order to serve your god in a respectful and humble way. It also depends on the denomination, the way you were raised, and your morals.

I would say read about the 5 main religions and see which one makes the most sense to you.
Assuming that "exam" refers to a school test, most would see the failure negative since most religions approve of education. However, if the exam were in a subject antithetical to the religion, a religion might see the failure positively because you were unable to be disuaded from the "proper" thought-path.
