In Scientology one might view life a little differently. In some religions one had a body and one has a soul. In Scientology one views the body has a having a life of its own, and one has their own life, pretty much, as a spiritual being. One is his own soul. He doesn't have 'a soul.' He has a life that may be more than a little separate from the life of the body. The life of a spiritual being may have 1000 or more times the potential of a living body all by itself. Many times during an operation the person may have the sensation of being outside the body and these are called Out of Body Experiences (OBE's). The person may remember looking down at the body (while the body is unconscious) or looking at the body from across the room, or the sensation of going to a loved one and letting them know they are alright. (Well, maybe sort of alright at that point.) He may hear and remember conversations that go on between the doctors and nurses.

So just to review this a little, there are living cells that come from the mother and the father and these two living cells unite at conception and make one living body. This is the body only, and not the spirit, not you. Usually you as a spirit life take an interest in the baby's body much later, say about 15 minutes before birth. I don't know of a name for this specific moment in other religions, but in Scientology it is called the Assumption. Often the spirit life is not too happy with what happened before so he or she just decides in the direction of this new little body to 'be the body'. Now he or she is still him or herself, but they believe they are no more than the capabilities of this little body. Like an actor doing Hamlet. He might get really convincing. If they were a great composer in a previous life they may have fantastic capabilities, but after the Assumption, they may just feel little and helpless. All of their abilities continue. But now get the idea that the person has decided to only 'be a body'.

So that is the beginning of one life for a person, 15 minutes or so before birth, usually. Then they are born and usually remember nothing, and feel small and helpless. Sometimes not. Take a case like 'Bridey Murphy'. She could remember her previous family, until she was able to physically visit them, and verify they were alright (more less with no mom.), then she let it all go, and could from that point remember nothing but her new life as a very young girl in England.

Now what happens at death? Two things basically.

One: the living body dies. It dies kind of slowly, not all at one time. The lungs stop working, and they start to decompose. Then probably the heart stops working. This is just body stuff, not the spirit. Then the brain. It may take a year for the fingernails to finally die.

Now, for the second part: the spirit, you. At some point the spirit will lose interest in that body, or have no more purpose for this body, and will separate itself electronically from the body. When very precise tests were done it was found at the moment of death that a body tends to lose at a specific instant a certain tiny weight. That would be this moment of leaving the body. That is not death for one as a spirit. That is just leaving the body, like when one goes to sleep and feels that little jerk in their muscles sometimes, or like in that hospital room, we mentioned above. The body might be still alive and you are technically still alive. But when the person has no more purpose for that body, that would be the end of that life, as far as the spirit is concerned. When the body dies that is up to a doctor. At one time it was when the breathing stopped. But of course one could do CPR and get things going again pretty much all the time. If the heart stopped, well CPR might fix that too. If the brain stops the doctor would probably stop these days as well. But sometimes brain dead people are kept alive with machines. That's again, body stuff. If the person, the spiritual being, the spirit life has no more purpose for that body, it is dead, to him. Occasionally, someone says something cute to the body...the spiritual being after this point and something amazing happens. One man called a spiritual being back by saying in a very lecherous way, 'Boy that wife of yours looks really hot to me! I think I will go pay her a visit now that you are dead and gone! She will be grieving and will need someone to comfort her and I think she will just jump into bed with me so fast!' I apologize for being a bit crude here, but that is the kind of story that did, and might appeal to someone and bamm, their back and they start or sit up and scream at you. 'You will not have my wife!' Maybe try to kill you. That is what that guy did and got the departed soul interested enough, to slam back into the body and make it live again.

So from that point to the Assumption, 15 minutes before birth for most folks, is called the Between Lives area. Let's take a few examples: Let's say the person believes they will just die and molder away. That is a kind of weird purpose, but that does happen. The person just lays there with the embalmed body and until it molders away hundreds or maybe a thousand years. Then he probably goes into oblivion for a bit and then emotionally connects with a mother to be that has that special glow about her and he takes an interest in that... Now how about the guy who feels he is going to Hell. Well just like he can create dreams every night of his life if he wishes, he can easily create this 'Hell' for himself. Now what if this guy over a long period of time has really gotten someone in for him? This other person might have installed a little electronic pattern and thought that says, 'As soon as you have no purpose for that life, report in here.' And the person reports in to where ever 'here' happens to be. Now for a lot of people that might take about 15 minutes there, and then they get interested, one way or another in a mother with a special glow and its just happens to be 15 minutes before birth again. The game of life then starts all over for the spritual being.

Anyways, leaving out the really bad parts, that is how I see it.
