Casting lots is simply relying on chance to settle a situation - like tossing a coin or drawing a short straw. The Jews believed that if they prayed before casting lots then God would guide them in their choice. The two most famous incidences of casting lots are firstly when the soldiers who crucified Jesus cast lots (ie gambled) to see who would win Jesus' robe that was stripped from him before his crucifxion. Secondly, the disciples prayed and then cast lots to see who would replace Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, after Judas killed himself. The 'winner' was the new disciple, Matthias. This was the last time that casting lots is mentioned in The Bible as, after this, the coming of the Holy Spirit to all people meant that casting lots was not needed, or desired, any more.

John 8:3-9
Casting lots is like drawing straws or drawing names out of a hat. It doesn't say in acts exactly what the 'lots' were, they could have been sticks or stones with names on them. Casting lots is also mentioned in the Old Testament. For example: Numbers 26:55, 33:54, 34:13 Joshua 18: 6-10 Jonah 1:7

Judas was replaced by Matthias in the Bible because Judas betrayed Jesus by handing him over to the authorities, leading to his crucifixion. The other disciples felt it was necessary to fill the vacant position among the twelve apostles, and Matthias was chosen through a process of prayer and casting lots.
The soldiers divided Jesus' clothes by casting lots for them, fulfilling a prophecy in the Bible which states, "They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." (John 19:24) This act symbolized the soldiers' callousness and demonstrated their lack of regard for Jesus as they crucified him.
