Historically, Catholicism was practiced all through Europe beginning with the eldest daughter of the Church - France, which in 800 A.D. was ruled by Charlemagne who ruled the entire Holy Roman Empire - which included all of Europe, excepting Spain. After the protestant revolt in the 16th century, with the Peace of Augsburg (1555) which legalized Lutherans, and later the Peace of Westphalia (1648) which legalized other protestants (Calvinists) established what is now northern German as protestant, along with other areas, like what is now the Netherlands, etc. Henry VIII, and later his children, Edward VI, and Elizabeth I made England protestant, and Calvinist was entrenched in Scotland at the same time. Most of Scandinavia also fell under the Lutheran influence. France, Spain, southern Europe - Belgium, Austria, what is now southern Germany, Italy, etc. remained Catholic.

In the early twenty-first century, though, I'm afraid that you will find only pockets of active Catholicism in Europe. Vast numbers of churches and Cathedrals are now only open as museums, perhaps with a Mass now and then. Very few Europeans are getting married in the Church or baptizing their children and bringing them up as Catholic. The fastest growing religion, the only growing religion, in Europe right now is Islam both through the birth rate and Immigration.
