Of course that is a matter of opinion. However, the secular point of view is that it is indeed holding humanity back, as all religions are.

First, it seeks to force people to deny the scientific truths regarding the origin of our species and our cosmos, and substitute our knowledge for Biblical claims, that have been proved false for several hundred years now.

Second, it holds many particular aspects of human society back, including scientific and medical progress, such as stem cell research which could be saving lives.

Third, it holds humanity back in terms of adressing the inequalities in the human condition, by providing a perceived legitimate excuse for discrimination, especially based on sexual orientation.

These are just a few ways that it, along with other religions, "hold us back".

AnswerChristianity as it is commonly followed today undoubtedly is. This is so since it has added much that is both displeasing to and is contrary to God's will. Many of these human additions and traditions also obscure the plain and simple truth of God's word and His love for mankind.

Christianity in its essence is in line with how humans were made to function - to have an unbroken relationship with their maker. As such, they are free to be all they can and should be and to develop to their fullest potential.

It is really humanity that is holding Christianity back from being what it ought to be and could be for the good of the world. Humanity spoils things now just as it did in the beginning. If people reject the only way to function right and also reject the only way to get things straightened out by calling it discrimination prejudice or intolerance or some other unpopular term, then they will miss the opportunity they only get once. If I reject the manufacturers advice and put water into my gas tank instead of gas, I'm sorry, but she ain't gonna go, no matter how ill informed I regard the manufacturer. Man was not made to run in rebellion against his maker. This is why people are in a constant search for something missing.
