According to The Bible, God is a very loving God, but He is also holy and righteous and just (John 3:16). God wants everyone to be able to make it to heaven (2 Peter 3:9) but the problem that keeps us from going to heaven is our sin - Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God". Sin is anything that we do to disobey God (steal, lie, hate, dishonor your parents, lust, covet, use God's name in vain, etc.) God is so holy that he cannot allow sin into his presence, and sin demands a punishment. A judge in today's courtrooms would not be just if He just forgave every person who came through his courtroom after breaking the law. God is willing and desiring to forgive all men and women of their sin so that they can go to heaven when they die, but the righteous demands of justice must be satisfied first. And what is justice, what is the penalty for sin? The Bible says in Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death..." and "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:12-15) So if a person takes responsibility for his own sin debt, he/she would die and then spend eternity in a place called hell, or the lake of fire. The only other way to pay the penalty for sin is if a sinless substitute takes the sinner's place. That is what Jesus Christ did on the cross of calvary. The Bible says that Christ died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) and that He is the "propitiation" (payment or satisfation to God's requirements) for our sins (Romans 3:25, 1 John 2:2, 1 John 4:10). There is only one way to receive forgiveness for any sin, and that is through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:14, John 14:6). The only way to receive forgiveness for all sins and to go to heaven when you die, is to accept the payment that Christ made in your stead when he died on the cross. You cannot earn forgiveness of sins, either by going to church or doing good deeds, but you can accept Christ's payment for your sin debt, and then God will wash away your sin and then see you as righteous as Christ, the sinless Son of God. But just like any gift that is given, you must accept it. The Bible explains how to accept this free gift in Romans 10:9-11, 13 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (from your sins and from hell). For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Now, if you have accepted this free gift, then you have forgiveness of your sin and a home in heaven! All sin, has been promised to be forgiven those who accept Christ. Like it says in Mathew 12:31, all sin will be forgiven except the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost. (That is when someone is guilty of rejecting the Holy Ghost's message of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Someone who has rejected this and is in hell because of it, will not be forgiven, they have no "second chance")
