And excommunication is a tool to heal somebody from unrepented public sin. They would still be required to go to Mass each week, obey the Commandments, etc. The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ: It represents God in this world and, as such, is open to everybody, loves everyone as God loves them. God loves people and expects them to grow up and start acting like adults, so the Church expects people to follow the Commandments and grow in prayer and love. There is no possibility of "disowning" somebody.
